COCONUT BARFI (தேங்காய் பர்ஃபி)

Coconut barfi is one among the easy-to-make sweets.

Coconut Barfi


Grated Coconut - 1 cup
Sugar - 1 1/4 cup
Water to extract Coconut milk
Ghee - 1 1/2 tbsp
Elachi powder

SERVES: 10-12 pieces

Method: Coconut Barfi

  • Grate coconut without its brown skin. (Refer AOC Tip#02)
  • Separate one cup of coconut into two equal parts.
  • Grind one half with water and drain the mixture to obtain coconut milk. (You can make use of both these halves)
  • Add coconut milk and sugar to a hot pan. Heat the syrup till it reaches ball consistency.
  • Add the grated coconut (including the half cup that was used for coconut milk) to the sugar syrup.
  • Mix well until the mixture starts leaving out of the pan. (Please be careful while stirring as bubbles keep popping out of the pan)
  • Add pinch of Elachi powder and ghee for flavour.
  • Pour into a greased tray.
  • The mixture would take about 20 minutes to cool. 
  • Once semi solid., cut horizontal and vertical lines with a knife.
  • When completely set, remove the cut pieces from the pan.
